An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Khoribari police station sustained serious injuries during an attack by a group of drunkards on Monday night. The injured officer, identified as Shyam Thapa, is currently undergoing treatment at the Khoribari Rural Hospital.
The attack occurred during a police campaign against the illegal sale of country liquor in the Dangujot area near the Bengal-Bihar border. For several days, Khoribari police have been actively conducting crackdowns on illicit liquor trade in the region. While carrying out one such operation, the police team was ambushed by a group of inebriated individuals.
ASI Shyam Thapa suffered injuries during the assault and was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the swift intervention of law enforcement, several perpetrators managed to flee the scene.
However, the police have managed to arrest one accused, identified as Sunil Mahato, in connection with the attack. A manhunt is underway to apprehend the other individuals involved.
Police sources revealed that the ongoing operation against country liquor has been a critical initiative to curb illegal activities in the Bengal-Bihar border area, which has witnessed a surge in such trade. The assault on the ASI has highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement officers during such operations.
"The attack was sudden and planned, possibly to disrupt the campaign. We have arrested one individual and are intensifying our efforts to track down the remaining culprits," a senior police official stated.
Meanwhile, ASI Thapa’s condition is reported to be stable, and he is expected to recover soon. Law enforcement agencies have vowed to continue their crackdown on illicit liquor despite the incident.
